  2.     ARCHIVE DEVICE ADD/MODIFY
  3.  
  4.     In order to make a backup, the characteristics of the backup device must
  5.     be known to the backup software. Enlighten/Archive allows the system
  6.     administrator to create logical backup devices which include all the
  7.     technical parameters required. The technical parameters for the device
  8.     are entered only once, and when a backup/restore is made, the
  9.     administrator must only select the logical name chosen for that device.
  10.  
  11.     This window allows the administrator to create a new backup device.
  12.  
  13.     The Raw Device name is the name of the UNIX device to which the backup
  14.     device is attached. This may be often a tape device. For the exact names
  15.     of the available devices on the system please check your hardware
  16.     reference manual. The following table however, may help in determine the
  17.     tape device names which may be on your system.

  29.     The Device Type is only used to calculate the size of the backup device.
  30.     If you know the capacity of the backup media, or if you do not want to
  31.     use any of the given types, select a Custom type and enter the backup
  32.     capacity yourself.

  34.     There are two differences in the Modify window:
  35.  
  36.     + the Logical Device Name field is view-only.
  37.  
  38.     + you can use the Modify button (rather than the Add button) after
  39.       you've made all your changes and
  40.  
  41.     + you can use the Next button to modify additional backup schedules
  42.       if you've selected more than one backup to modify from the Add
  43.       Device Configuration list.

  45.     The rest of this section describes the fields and their parameters
  46.     within these windows.

  48.     Logical Device Name
  49.  
  50.     This field represents the common name a user will specify when
  51.     accessing this backup device. This field is required.

  53.     Raw Device
  54.  
  55.     This field contains the actual UNIX device name, such as /dev/rmt0.
  56.     You can click on the select button to choose from a list of possible
  57.     tape device names. You can also prefix the device name with its host
  58.     name, followed by a colon (:), to define remote backup devices on
  59.     hosts running the enld daemon.

  61.     If, for example, you have a device /dev/rmt/0h on host athens, the
  62.     name of the device would be:

  64.         athens:/dev/rmt/0h

  66.     This field is required.

  68.     Description
  69.  
  70.     This can be a friendly name for the device or a description of the
  71.     device. This field is required.

  73.     Block Size
  74.  
  75.     Each type of device has a blocking factor associated with it. The
  76.     blocking factor is the size of each data block written to the
  77.     device. The most common blocking factor is 20 blocks; however, you
  78.     can backup data using a blocking factor of up to 2000 blocks. This
  79.     field is required.

  81.     Note: Block size is O/S dependent. On Solaris 2.4, the block size is
  82.     1024 bytes (1K).

  84.     Device Type
  85.  
  86.     The Device Type specifies the device's capacity. This field is
  87.     required. The following options are available:
  88.  
  89.     + Cartridge Tape
  90.     + Reel
  91.     + Custom
  92.     + Raw
  93.     + 8 MM
  94.  
  95.     Cartridge - When you click on this button, tape length and density
  96.     descriptions are displayed. For length, click the left mouse button
  97.     and then drag the cursor to the appropriate value: 300, 450, or 600
  98.     feet. For density, click on QIC 24 (low) or QIC 120 (high).

  100.     Reel - When you click on this button, tape length and density line
  101.     descriptions are displayed. For length, click the left mouse button
  102.     and then drag the cursor to the appropriate value: 600, 1200, or
  103.     2400 feet. For density, click on 1600 (low) or 6250 (high).

  105.     Custom - You can click on the Custom button to define your own device.
  106.     You will be prompted to enter the capacity for the new device in KB.
  107.     If you don't know the capacity or you do not wish to limit the
  108.     device size, enter 500.

  110.     Raw - You can click on the Raw button to quickly add an entry to the
  111.     device list. Use this option to add a device with no capacity or a
  112.     new piece of media. Eventually, you should re-define this storage
  113.     device.

  115.     8 MM - Click on the 8 MM button to define an 8mm cartridge tape
  116.     device. You will be prompted to select the capacity of the tape. The
  117.     options are 2GB (default) and 5GB. If neither of these options
  118.     apply, create a Custom backup device, instead, and manually set the
  119.     device's capacity. Or you can create a Raw device and define the
  120.     device capacity later.
